Academic dress is a sign of success in every student’s life. No one could wear it without the skills acquired in the education process. One would be more proud if the doctorate graduation regalia will be worn during the commencement exercises. Let’s take a look on the details of such regalia type to further enhance the knowledge on it.
There are slight differences among these regalia. The doctorate graduation regalia are obvious on its three lines being patched on its sleeves. These lines represent the academic level and field of discipline attained by the bearer. Even they use black fabric for its robe, like in the bachelors and masters degree, they don’t use the same cap. The doctorate degrees may use a tam which a soft rounded headpiece instead of a mortarboard which is a flat square hat with a tassel being suspended by the button.
The use of these doctorate graduation regalia caps only depend on the institution awarding the degree. Their styles also vary from one country to another. The cap consists of a horizontal square board which is fixed upon a skull-cap and has a tassel attached to the center. This tassel also represents the degree attained by the bearer for it follows a color code just like the graduation regalia pattern of hoods.
The colors of the doctorate regalia hood follow an Academic Costume Code of Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume, and it is accepted by the American Council on Education. It is largely standardized in United States. It sets rules in the color usage among hoods. Some of the colors used in hoods are: brown for Architecture and Fine Arts; orange for Engineering, maize for Agriculture because this color signifies a plentiful harvest; dark blue for Philosophy, sage for Physical Education; lemon for Library Science; Crimson for Journalism; drab for Business, Accountancy, and Commerce; copper for Economics; Kelly green for medicine; apricot for Nursing; pink for Music because it is a lively kind of art; olive for Pharmacy; gold for Science because it indicates the wealth of research; citron for Social Work, peacock for Public Administration; gray for Veterinary, and many more.
When there are cases wherein the field of discipline attained belongs to two broader disciplines, it should follow the specifics. It is true not only to Bachelor’s degree but also to Master’s and Doctoral Degrees. If one is awarded a Doctor of Public Administration in Science and Technology, doctorate hoods should follow the golden yellow trim and not the peacock blue which is intended for public administration. These hoods also vary in length and sizes of velvet trims. The college graduation regalia size length is four feet. It uses black fabric for its shell and satin for its lining. The velvet trims’ size should be five inches.
One may find the doctorate graduation regalia simple but the whole essence of it are unfathomable for one could not wear it without the most enhanced skills of a certain field of expertise. Be proud and show the confidence of wearing such a piece of clothing.
