Graduation may be a very exciting experience, but there are quite a few things that one must keep in mind as a part of the preparation phase for the said event, and purchasing some garments like graduation hoods and stoles is definitely one of them. Graduation hoods and stoles are one of the most symbolic garments used in the whole graduation regalia. The Graduation hoods bachelors are used by candidates for graduation from a Master’s degree; while Graduation stoles are used by candidate of graduation from the High School department. Here are several tips on how to wear the different graduation hoods and stoles that can help one prepare for one of the most special events in their life.

1. The Graduation Hood

Graduation hoods and stoles require to be placed in one’s graduation ensemble in different ways. The graduation hood is quite larger and taller than a graduation stole, and requires more attention. Wear the graduation hood over the head, making sure that it drapes down unto the back of one’s graduation gown. The graduation hood’s velvet lining comes in various colors, depending on what department the graduate belongs to.  If a graduate has earned a masters degree from the nursing department, the velvet lining must be apricot, orange if one is from the engineering department, yellow or gold from the business administration department, so on and so forth. The velvet portion must be seen at the back of the graduation gown. This is the time wherein one would need the assistance of a friend or a colleague in order to help one turn the hood’s lining out in order to make it more visible. Secure the hood at the back of the gown by attaching the button found at the upper back of one’s hood in order to prevent it from falling off.

2. The Graduation Stole

The graduation stole is also referred to as a sash, is a thinner version and is less complicated to wear than the graduation hood. Its main purpose is to display the achievements garnered by the one wearing it.  Various symbols are also embroidered upon it in order to know which affiliation a graduate belongs to as well. Before wearing the graduation stole, make sure that the “V” shaped end faces the front. Wear the graduation stoles over the head, with the “V” shaped end positioned at the back, with the rest of the stole hanging at a parallel position at the front of the graduation gown. Both ends of the graduation stole that is situated at the side must look even, there fore one must be able to check it time after time in order to make it look neater.
Apart from all these helpful tips, it is still very important to have a friend or a family member to help one look over their graduation attire and make sure that everything is as neat and arranged as it should be. 1. What is your suggestion on wearing two stoles at the same time? Both are for pretty prestigious clubs (one being a national honors fraternity). I will definitely be wearing both but not sure how. Thanks

  2. Thanks for including tips on how to wear the stole! I'm getting ready to graduate soon, and I've been really confused at how to wear all the different pieces, or what they even signify! I didn't realize that it displays achievements and affiliation. That makes me a little more excited to receive and wear mine!
